Idiot of the Day

by LLRRoD on November 30th, 2009

The idiot of the day award goes to Jerome Charles Eberle, 39, from Winona, Minnesota. Apparently he was seen destroying televisions saying “Hammer” in a ‘monotone’ voice a Target store.

He was tased and brought in for mental evaluation.

A shopper reported seeing Eberle smashing TVs while saying “hammer” in a monotone. Another witness said Eberle was “walking like Frankenstein.” Eberle led police on a chase through the store, taking swings at officers with the hammer. Officers needed to use a Taser to take him into custody.

Cyber Monday

by LLRRoD on November 30th, 2009

Another Thanksgiving Weekend is in the books. Went out and helped a friend snag a 32″ Westinghouse at Target last Friday. Wasn’t as bad as previous years, got there at 2AM, 23rd in line and got one no problems.

Today is dubbed Cyber Monday (created by e-tailers to compete with Black Friday). There are a few great deals, but overall nothing too exciting. The popular thing people are doing right now is the Bing Cashback, which gives you roughly 10% back on your order after thirty days or so.

So now back into the swing of things and the countdown begins to Christmas!

Which Blu-Ray To Get??

by LLRRoD on November 23rd, 2009

Wondering which Blu-ray deal to go for this coming Friday? Basically it comes down to these players.

Samsung BD-P1600-A – $149.99
Sony BDPS36 – $149.99
Magnavox NB500 – $78.99
Insignia NS-BRDVD3 – $99.99

Hands down, the Samsung BD-P1600-A is the one to target or look for. Two main things it has that the other players don’t (have both): Wi-Fi and Internet Streaming. Why are these two things so important? Well for one, blu-ray players, unlike DVD players have firmware updates. Sometimes new content is available that’s downloaded to the device itself, having wi-fi makes it convenient without having to run ‘another’ cord behind your already cluttered entertainment center. Internet Streaming is the other biggie.

As an avid Netflix user, you’re going to want this feature. Whether you have netflix or you don’t, eventually you’re going to want to try it, and you won’t regret it. Why? Because sometimes you just want to stream a series or movie and don’t want to wait, rent or ‘download’ a movie. Having the freedom to stream through Netflix is an amazing and I think important feature to any blu-ray player.

The rest of the specs on these players are practically the same, and so is the price point. The Insignia and Magnavox are cheaper but I would definitely go for the Samsung BD-P1600-A. In fact I may just place an order for it for my parents, haha.

Modern Warfare 2 Performance Tests

by LLRRoD on November 23rd, 2009

Gamespot has done some performance test on various gaming machines ranging in specs. At the highest end machine, it was able to do about 141 FPS while the lowest was a meager 21 FPS. If you are running CoD: MW2 on a PC, this is a pretty good indicator of where your system may level off.

We put together a few sample systems to show how the game performed using real-world computers. Our slowest machine and the absolute minimum required to run the game, a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 paired with a GeForce 6800, struggled to churn out a barely playable experience at rock-bottom image-quality settings. Our mid-range system, outfitted with a 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo and a Radeon HD 5770, pumped out a more than playable experience with every setting on and a resolution of 1920×1200. The behemoth system, a Core i7-960 paired with the Radeon HD 5970, literally doubled the performance of our midrange sytem. The behemoth is entirely overkill for Modern Warfare 2.

Efren Peñaflorida 2009 Hero of the Year

by LLRRoD on November 22nd, 2009

Not technology news, but important nonetheless.

Efren Peñaflorida has been named the CNN 2009 Hero of the Year. He started a pushcart classroom program in the Philippines and has helped a lot of the youth in poverty from going into a life of crime and gangs. In a world that we see more bad than good, it’s great to see when men and women like Efren are honored.

The event will air on Thanksgiving, November 26, 2009 at 9PM EST on CNN.

So to each and every person inside in this theater and for those who are watching at home, the hero in you is waiting to be unleashed. Serve, serve well, serve others above yourself and be happy to serve. As I always tell to my co-volunteers … you are the change that you dream as I am the change that I dream and collectively we are the change that this world needs to be.

Codename Windows 8

by LLRRoD on November 21st, 2009

Wondering when the next Windows is suppose to come out?

Well Microsoft recently released a roadmap. It’s currently codenamed “Windows 8″ and is projected to be released in 2012.

On a side note, if you are still considering whether or not to upgrade to Windows 7, I do highly recommend it. As a previous Vista user, all I can say is it’s a lot better and much less of a hassle. Trying to search for anything in Vista was pretty much useless, but rest assured that Win7 has fixed a lot of these issues. Long story short, Win7 is what Vista should have been.
